The campground celebrated Columbus Day by having a Halloween Party. We decorated our sites, carved pumpkins and dressed in costumes to win prizes. During the day, Mary, Jack and I put cups on a large wooden board in the shape of a pumpkin then filled each with either candy, gift certificates, gift cards, or money. We then cut newspapers and glued them to the top of each cup concealing the contents. Mary then painted the newspapers pumpkin orange and added green stems and a face. Wow, we did a really good job, it looked great. Of course, like most events, we had a pot luck dinner with, as usual, great food. After everyone finished, those who were dressing in costume disappeared. Mary and another camper (she wouldn't say who), rode around taking pictures of the decorated sights to judge them. At 7pm, we had a huge bonfire and the pumpkin carving and costume contests. Mary announced the winner of the site decorating contest and we won! I think it was because we were the only one with lights, we won $50. Next was the winner of the pumpkin carving contest. There were four pumpkins and guess what, we won. Our pumpkin, that Jack carved, was a witch. One of the seasonal campers asked if anyone needed a witches hat, so I took it and put on the pumpkin backwards so the white hair was hanging in the face. Nothing special, but when you turn it around, Jack had carved a butt crack. You'll see in the picture. Mary said the judge (don't know who) said that's why it won. We won $25.
Next was the costume contest. This year the theme was to dress as a movie character, horror, comedy or romance. Out of a dozen, only four of us dressed to theme that I could tell. Two were Mary Poppins and her chimney sweep, one was the wicked witch of the west, one was Tim, "The tool man" (his name is actually Tim and he is a tool man, so I guess he just came as himself), and me as Jacob Marley. Mary chose a woman who was visiting from Germany to be the judge, so she didn't know anyone. She announced that everyone had five minutes to "bribe" the judge and any monies given would go to the animal shelter. Everyone tried but a small boy dressed as a magician with a small puppy, pulled it out of a hat and kissed the judge; game over! Yes, he won, $50. Then, Mary had everyone who participated in the site decorating, pumpkin carving or costume contests to come up to the pumpkin board. If you participated in one, two or three, you punched out one cup for each. The little boy who won the costume contest punched three because he dressed, his parents did a pumpkin and decorated their site. He walked home with $50 for the costume, a $25 gift certificate and a $25 gift card. I participated in all three so I got three punches and got $1 and two pieces of candy. It was a lot of fun.
