4th of July - The Bluffs, Freedom, NH

July 3rd - This morning we participated in a golf cart parade with 64 other golf carts, all decorated for the fourth. We rode through both campgrounds playing patriotic songs. We then stopped at an open field for a Pledge of Alliance. Tonight, the clubhouse had an ice cream social. We had a choice of vanilla, chocolate, chocolate chip or coffee ice cream and toppings. After the ice cream, three comedians entertained us for two hours. Jack wasn’t interested in listening to the comedians, so I brought him back and I went back down. The first comedian was very dry and not very funny. The second was a pot smoking, long-haired, foul-mouthed comedian that was not good at all. The third guy, who was the announcer, was very funny. He related to all of us and received a round of applause.

July 4th - This afternoon, I picked up two friends and participated in a golf cart poker run. At noon, everyone, 68 of us, showed up at the clubhouse, paid $5 a person to get a place in the run and waited for instructions. We were each given a sheet with seven clues that referred to seven spots within the campground where you would find a basket filled with envelopes. Once you figured out the clue, you drove to the spot and picked up one envelope containing a card. When you picked up all five envelopes (cards), you returned to the clubhouse to have your poker hand recorded. Marie, Debbie and I figured out all the clues first, or I should say, Debbie figured out all the clues then we headed out to find the baskets and get our envelopes. All envelopes had to remain sealed until you returned to the clubhouse where they were opened to reveal your poker hand. Of course, a poker hand is only five cards, so two of the clues were "bogus", "no envelopes to be found here" was on a sign at the spot, but you didn't know that until you got there. Neither one of us had a winning hand. By 1 pm, everyone, except one new couple had checked in. We waited about 20 minutes then sent a couple out to look for them. It seems that they only picked up one envelope from each spot when they both paid, so they had to do it over again for the second envelope. Finally, with them checked in, they announced the winners. First place (a straight) won $185; the second place (3 Queens) won $105; and the third place (3 Jacks) won $95. Good prizes and it was a lot of fun.

July 5th - Today, we had a hot dog and hamburger cookout by the pool. For $5 you got a hamburger or hot dog, chips, and all the fixings. We joined our friends and many others. Lots of people went swimming afterwards. Then later we went to another ice cream social.

It was a fun and fattening weekend! There were no fireworks from here, but we could see some over the bay from the beach.
