The Great Race

Every year a bunch of old cars drive in what they call the Great Race. Routes are always different and this year they were driving from Buffalo, New York to Halifax, Nova Scotia and the route took them passed Mt. Washington, New Hampshire into Gardiner, Maine for an overnight stay. We were in Connecticut when they drove passed Mt. Washington and this area but we decided to drive back up into Gardner, Maine to see them come into town. What a sight, 120 old cars driving down the main street of town. This was a big deal with the entire town coming out and even being broadcast over 93.5 FM radio station. The cars were really neat and most of the drivers were also dressed in period clothing. All the cars were parked along the street so people could walk around them and a big festival was held in Washington Park on the waterfront. It was a perfect day with temperatures in the upper 70's.

We stayed in a Quality Inn just south of town and met and talked to several of the drivers who were also staying there. A few had teams following and we talked to a few who were making repairs on their cars. Hemmings Motor News, Coker Tire and Hagerty all had support trucks. The following morning after breakfast, the cars left, at one-minute intervals, on their way to Bangor, Maine. It was great fun.
